About Nike Brand Colors

Nike’s black-and-white presentation shows how a nearly achromatic palette can leave recognition to shape, scale, motion, photography, and placement. The Department of Nike Archives traces the Swoosh to Portland State graphic-design student Carolyn Davidson and a fast 1971 production decision; what began as a hand-drawn mark became an identifier capable of surviving extensive changes in medium and context.

Black and white provide maximum compositional flexibility, but they do not make the Swoosh a generic graphic element. Nike says permission to use or modify its advertising, images, logos, and trademarks is rarely granted and places responsibility for a proposed use on the user. This page therefore treats the neutral values as design-system references and does not provide a substitute logo.

This independent color reference does not distribute Nike artwork, imply sponsorship, grant trademark permission, or advise whether any particular use is legally permissible.
