About Han Purple Color
Han purple, also called Chinese purple, is a synthetic barium copper silicate developed in ancient China at least two millennia ago. Getty conservation research records its use with the related Han blue on pottery, metal objects, wall paintings, beads, and pigment sticks, especially around the Qin and Han periods. Producing it required controlled raw materials, fluxes, temperature, and firing conditions rather than simply grinding a naturally purple stone.
The digital swatch captures the family’s saturated blue-violet impression, not the variable appearance of an archaeological paint layer. Han purple can fade or decompose, particularly with acid or heat, while particle size, binder, aging, and illumination alter what survives. In contemporary palettes it creates a historically resonant accent beside mineral blue, clay, bronze, and restrained neutrals.
This HEX is a modern visual reference, not a chemical match, conservation identification, synthesis recipe, or claim about an artifact’s original appearance.
