About Cinnabar Color

Cinnabar is the naturally occurring mercury sulfide mineral historically ground for a powerful red-orange pigment; vermilion is the corresponding pigment name, including manufactured forms of the same basic compound. Its global history reaches back thousands of years and includes ritual, funerary, and prestige uses.

Cinnabar works digitally as a warm red with more mineral weight than a generic orange-red. It can energize editorial graphics and historically informed palettes, particularly beside black, warm white, and muted stone colors. The material history requires a clear distinction: a screen swatch is harmless light, while real cinnabar and old mercury-containing pigments require expert safety practices.

The HEX value is not a material identification, pigment recipe, or conservation safety assessment.
